Algebra Lessons
The following lessons are available for grades K- 8. Please click on the link of the lesson you would like and happy teaching!
KINDERGARTEN
This lesson works with counting numbers, using number combinations, and addition to create story problems/number sentences. Students drop colored bears on a mat and create story problems based on the numbers the bears land on. Once students understand the concrete aspects of the activity the number sentence can be added to the activity.

THIRD GRADE
This lesson integrates literature to show how important the ability to mulitply is. The book demonstrates grouping and using arrays to help a young girl count all the things in her life. The lesson addresses CCSS 3.OA.3 and the task is an open ended one that can be solved multiple ways, including using the methods presented in the book.

SEVENTH GRADE
In this math unit, students use a pan balance to study equality, order of operations, numerical and variable expressions, and other key algebraic concepts. Math content included in the lessons are Using a balance pan to demonstrate equivalence, Balancing shapes, numerical expressions, and variable expressions, Properties of equality, Order of operations, Solving equations using algebraic logic. The lesson below is lesson number three in the unit. The entire unit can be found on the Illuminations webpage. The lesson below has been modified from the lesson online.
